Presentation: Emily Helder & Ellie Jones

Abstract: A growing body of research is examining the role that religion, religious communities, and faith experiences play in the psychological functioning of LGBTQ+ persons (Brewster, 2015; Lefevor, 2021, Levy, 2013). Findings have revealed a complex interplay of religion and self-concept, mental health, and identity and spiritual development within the LGBTQ+ community. Building on an extensive literature review conducted as part of an honors thesis project, the presentation will summarize important aspects of this literature as well as discuss implications for how we can develop our faith communities to be safer and healthier spaces for our LGBTQ+ siblings. What does it look like to have a faith community in which LGBTQ+ persons can thrive?
